Hanzeong 1950 Summer Games

Revision as of 07:53, 13 April 2022 by Metzetta (talk | contribs)

The Hanzeong 1950 Summer Games, also known as the First Istroyan Games, were an international multi-sport competition held in Hanzeong, Metzetta, in August 1950. Hanzeong was chosen at random by the International Istroyan Games Committee to host the games in an effort to repair worldwide diplomatic relations following the conclusion of the Second Great War. At the time they were simply known as the Hanzeong 1950 Games but since the introduction of the Winter Games in 1976 they have been retroactively referred to as Summer Games. The Games were attended by Metzettan royalty including Emperor Jan-Hu.

Venues and Infrastructure

The Istroyan Stadium was specially constructed in Hanzeong to host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics, tug-of-war and archery events. The Imperial Swimming Baths in Hanzeong were refurbished to facilitate the swimming, artistic swimming and diving events. The fencing event was held in the famous Emperor's Gardens while the basketball, rugby, indoor volleyball, soccer, handball, tennis, table tennis, badminton, field hockey and trampoline events were held nearby in the Hanzeong Municipal Sports Complex. Taekwondo was held at Karam Dojo. Both gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics events were held in facilities provided by one of the capital's universities; University of Inwae.

Outside of the capital, the surfing and beach volleyball events were held at XX. Canoe events were hosted on XX, while rowing took place on XX. Men's golf was held at the Jamsu Golf Club, while women's golf was held on the same day at Yeulla Province Links. Baseball and cricket were both hosted in Hitui; baseball in Hitui Park Stadium, and cricket in Hitui Fields Stadium. Tenpin bowling was held in Inyang, near the capital. The mountain biking events took place at Mount XX while the road cycling events and marathon were held on the streets of Seochuk District in Ankae. Boxing, wrestling and weightlifting took place on the main campus of Ankae's Hotenwo University. Shooting events were contested at Uchyeo Armoury.

Medals

The medals were manufactured by the Imperial Mint. As the first ever medals they were relatively basic, with the obverse featuring the Istroyan Torch, the year and the names "Metzetta" and "Hanzeong" and the reverse featuring the magnolia blossom seen on Metzetta's flag.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony began with the entrance of IIGC President Harold Scudder and Metzetta's representative for the Games, Crown Princess Seunsi, followed by the hoisting of the flag and a performance of the national anthem. Performers wearing Mettubok then played a rendition of the Magnolia Waltz on traditional Metzettan flutes called tanso. After a display of traditional dance, the athletes entered the stadium and speeches were given by Scudder and Seunsi. Lastly, the stadium's beacon was lit with the Istroyan Torch by An Changrim, lightweight Taekwondo master.

Closing Ceremony

After the entrance of the flag-bearers and athletes, the flags of Metzetta, Ancient Istroya and Urcea were raised. The demonstration sport chosen by Metzetta was Ssireum, a traditional form of wrestling. Following the demonstration, the IIGC President presented the medals for the Men's Marathon and Crown Princess Seunsi presented the medals for the Women's Marathon. The Crown Princess then presented Scudder with a special Istroyan Games Flag, who then passed it on to the Urcean representative as the games were symbolically transferred. Scudder made his closing remarks and the Istroyan Flame was extinguished.

Broadcasting and Marketing

Domestically the Games were covered by Baeyang Public Broadcasting on their flagship channel, BPB1. The games' sponsors included Hyansae Motors.

Mascot

The official mascot for the Games was Mwicha the Bear Cub, who featured heavily on advertising and merchandise.
