The 10,000 Moukahlas, also known as the Myriad Moukahlayeen, or rarely as the Barsom Army of 10 Legion Ulariens, were a remarkable military force that pledged their loyalty to Bourgondii Royal Trading Company during its colonial rule from 1604 to 1809. Comprising both Arab and Persian warriors, they served as a formidable asset in expanding and maintaining Burgundie's colonial interests in Audonia. The force also included skilled warrors from nomadic tribes, known for their mastery of guerrilla warfare. Their knowledge of the terrain and ability to navigate the challenging landscapes greatly aided Burgundie's colonial endeavors.

The Myriad Moukahlayeen was the Burgoignesc-led successor of the barsom armies of the various historical powers in the Daria region of Audonia (e.g. the Deiocean Empire, the Arunid Empire, and the Oduniyyad Caliphate), a tradition it later carried on in the Burgoignesc Foreign Legion's IV Ularien Division and to a lesser extent, the Pukhgoignesc Gorhka Rifles Division. Despite their diverse backgrounds, the Myriad Moukahlayeen fostered a sense of unity, camaraderie, and high esprit de corps under the Bourgondii Royal Trading Company banner. This unity was crucial in achieving the Company's strategic and colonial objectives in the region.

Etymology

Name for the moukahla that many of the soldiers of the unit carried, a musket common in the areas of modern Battganuur, Bulkh, and Umardwal.

Role

The Myriad Moukahlayeen were established in 1604 response to the Bourgondii Royal Trading Company's call for assistance in maintaining colonial rule in the early 17th century in the Istroya Oriental colony, the Kandahari-Pukhtun colony, and the Colony of Santasi. Arab and Persian communities, recognizing the benefits of the Company's protection and resources, rallied to serve their colonial masters. They played a number of key roles throughout their service to include:

  • Territorial Control: The Myriad Moukahlayeen were instrumental in securing and maintaining control over key territories in the Audonia. Their mastery of guerrilla warfare allowed them to effectively patrol and defend these regions, which were often characterized by challenging terrain and hostile local populations.
  • Border Defense: The Moukahlayeen served as a first line of defense against rival colonial powers and companies and indigenous resistance movements. Their knowledge of the local landscape made them highly effective in repelling incursions and protecting the Company's colonial borders.
  • Intelligence Gathering: They excelled at gathering intelligence on local communities, rival colonial interests, and potential threats. Their deep-rooted connections within Arab and Persian societies allowed them to operate covertly and provide valuable information to the Company's colonial administrators.
  • Resource Extraction: They assisted in resource extraction efforts, ensuring the efficient exploitation of the region's valuable natural resources, such as minerals, spices, and agricultural products. Their ability to navigate the local environment made it easier to access these resources.
  • Alliances with Local Leaders: The Moukahlayeen formed strategic alliances with influential local leaders and tribal groups. These alliances often translated into increased cooperation and support for the Company's colonial endeavors. The Moukahlayeen acted as intermediaries in these diplomatic efforts and as such they grew very powerful throughout their tenure in the Burgoignesc colonial empire.
  • Suppressing Resistance Movements: In areas where indigenous populations resisted colonial rule, the Myriad Moukahlayeen were tasked with suppressing rebellions and uprisings. Their knowledge of the terrain and their ability to employ guerrilla tactics made them particularly effective in quelling resistance.
  • Expansion into New Territories: As the Company sought to expand its colonial holdings, the Myriad Moukahlayeen were at the forefront of these efforts. Their presence facilitated the establishment of colonial outposts and control over previously unclaimed or contested regions.

Legacy

Even during their reign they were an influencing force. Other Bergendii colonial companies created armies of natives modelled after the 10,000 Moukahlas.

The 10,000 Moukahlas is also cited as one of the precursor units of the modern Burgoignesc Foreign Legion.
