Carolina

Carolina refers to a region of northern Urcea which, at times, historically included southern portions of Carna. It is the home of the Garán people. Named for the first Southern King of the Levantines, the area would take an outsized importance in the early politics of the Holy Levantine Empire, and would later become a hotly contested area between Urcea and the Empire in the Caroline Wars. While the term may specifically refer to the Grand Duchy of Carolina or the provinces of Upper Carolina and Lower Carolina, the term generally refers to the area of Urcea to the direct north of the Valley on the northern side of the Pralia Mountains which is inhabited or influenced by the Garán people, including the province of Roscampus despite not having been part of the Grand Duchy of Carolina or its succeeding provinces.

Geography

Carolina primarily consists of a valley between the Pralia Mountains to the south and the highlands of southern Carna and Anglei to the north. It shares both topographical and climatalogical features with the Urcean State of Ænglasmarch, which borders Carolina to the east. Carolina's position north of the Pralias situates it outside of Urcea's traditional population base in the Valley, and for much of its history the majority of Carolina underwent different cultural and political development with the exception of Roscampus. The western portion of the region sits on the coast of the Odoneru Ocean, and accordingly it experiences temperatures and an overall climate similar to that of Carna. The interior part of Carolina is dominated by deciduous forests, which creates a significant contrast for individuals traveling north from Northgate and the Valley's sparse-looking flora.
