Impact of the Quasi-Wars

Kiro-Burgundian Gin & Tonic Race

The discovery of the anti-malarial properties of quinine, which greatly reduced the mortality rate of Occidentals in the tropical climes of central and southern Punth, spurred an intense competition between Burgundie and Kiravia to achieve quinine superiority. At the time, Insui held a near-monopoly on quinine-rich cinchona bark, allowing Cartadanian suppliers to sell at extremely high prices. Both Kiravia and Burgundie attempted to establish domestic cinchona plantations, at which Burgundie was far more successful, due in large part to a greater abundance of climatically suitable land. However, Kiravia held a comparative advantage in production of the principal delivery mechanism for quinine medicaments, gin, due to its more extensive distillation infrastructure and larger supply of juniper berries. This kept the two nations near parity for some time, but Burgundie would eventually pull far ahead of Kiravia in quinine production as its plantations approached peak productivity. The final blows to the Kiravian cinchona industry were dealt in YEAR and NEXTYEAR when Burgoniesc commandos mounted a string of successful sabotage attacks against cinchona plantations in Saint Kennera and the Melian Isles, setting fire to over X,000 acres of trees. Historians regard the decisive Burgoniesc victory in the Gin & Tonic Race as key to enabling unchallenged Burgundian dominance over Alshar.
