History

Since the states that make up the modern nation of Burgundie were settled and dominated by Latinic peoples there has been a connection between Burgundie Caphiria. While that bond has often followed the general trends of the Levanto-Sarpic Relations, Burgundie and Caphiria have not suffered the same level of peer-to-peer rivalry that Caphiria had with Urcea. As such, the vitriol and animosity wasn't as entrenched in either's nation's culture, despite Burgundie often acting in concert with Urcea against Caphirian interests. Caphiria has often seen Burgundie's position of one of necessity and convenience rather than one of hatred for the Caphirian way of life.

For its part, Burgundie has historically sided with the southern Levantine powerhouse Urcea in global politics. However, Burgundie is the first to extend the olive branch in the name of open commerce and global stabilization to Caphiria. Burgundie currently maintains good relations with Caphiria and is sometimes used as an intermediary between the three superpowers of Caphiria, Kiravia, and Urcea when tension is on the verge of breaking out into violence, or when tensions are coming down and a de-escalation is sought. However, Burgundie is attached at the hip to Urcea through history, culture, and institutions like the Levantine Union and Caphiria see Burgundie through that lens.

So it has always been the case that Burgundie and Caphiria have been on good trading terms except in the specific points of history when they were in direct (state-to-state) conflict with each other. Through this consistent interface Burgundie and Caphiria have come to a mutual respect. From the Burgoignesc perspective, Caphiria has maintained varying levels of hegemony in Sarpedon, even if in a tellurocratic fashion, and has maintained consistently wealthy markets for over 1000 years almost without fail. Both nations were among the most engaged in the rise and proliferation of capitalism in the Occidental world and as such they share common goals even when their interests are in conflict. Both nations have a globalist upper class who treat both countries as if they were one and the same and common industries have sprung up to support these elites. This has also led to many companies having market share in both countries and as such the conspicuous consumption of their middle classes have brought the countries closer together as well.

Caphiria sees Burgundie as the scrappy and resourceful country in Urcea's shadow. While the precepts of the Holy Levantine Empire have generally kept southern Levantia more traditionalist and retroreflective, Caphiria values that Burgundie has always been a bit of an outlier, embracing globalization, innovation, and perspectives from outside of Levantia.

The Barbary Straits Tete-a-Tete is a tabloid description of the international affairs relationship between Caphiria and Burgundie in Audonia were both states have significant interests in close proximity. These two powers are often observed "gifting" advanced technologies to their proxy states in the region and then instigating conflict to stress test the technologies, especially military technology.
